English Idiom of the Day 💬
back to square one
It means back to the starting point, with no progress made.
A: I accidentally deleted my test notes on my smartphone.
B: Oh no. Do you have any backup notes?
A: I don't. I'm back to square one.
In this conversation, speaker A erased the notes without any backup. The speaker needs to write/type them down again. Hence, back to square one.

🤓 Grammar Bits: Plural Nouns
Nouns can be
singular or
plural.
When you are talking about two or more people, animals, places, or things, use plural nouns.
Most nouns are made plural by adding -s at the end. Here are some exceptions:
- When the last letters of singular nouns are ch, sh, s, ss or x, you usually add -es to form the plural.
watch - watches
sandwich - sandwiches
- Nouns are made plural by changing y to i, and adding -es.
lily - lilies
family - families
- If there is a vowel before the y, add -s to form the plural.
key - keys
tray - trays
- If a noun ends in -f, you often change f to v, and add -es.
knife - knives
wolf - wolves
- If a noun ends in -o, you just add -s or -es to form the plural.
potato - potatoes
kangaroo - kangaroos
- Some plural nouns don’t follow the -s rule. They don’t end in -s, -es, -ies or -ves. Instead, the word changes form.
mouse - mice
foot - feet
- Some plural nouns are the same as the singular noun.
sheep - sheep
furniture - furniture
- Some nouns are always plural.
pants
eyeglasses
Can you make these singular nouns into plural nouns?
butterfly
chimney
fish
mango
goggles
