There are many countries in the world all with their own special and unique holidays. Today there are several countries celebrating different public holidays with different culturally specific reasons. In South Africa it is Heritage day.
Heritage day is an important South African holiday that celebrates the unique make up of the country. There are several different races in South Africa, all with a unique origin and culturally specific traditions. Since they can not all be celebrated at different times, the government at the time selected one day that would unite all South Africans and called it Heritage day. This is the day to showcase different cultures and traditions, heritage day is also commonly known as Braai day, which is a day for South Africans to get together with family and friends and barbeque.
The story of the boy who saved a town
There is an old Dutch folktale about a city at the edge of a massive dam. There was heavy rain and the dam was filled. One day a young boy was walking along the wall of the dam and noticed a tiny hole where water was beginning to pour through. There was also several cracks surrounding the hole and the boy knew that if the dam burst open it would be bad for the town. The boy stuck his finger in the hole to stop the dam from bursting and stayed there. It was winter and the conditions were harsh but the boy stayed to protect the town.
The story of the little match girl
The little match girl is a heart breaking story of poverty. A little girl is tasked by her father to sell matches and is not to return home till she does so. It is winter and terribly cold, the little girl can't seem to sell the last 3 matches. She decides to use all three matches to keep warm, each match shows her a vision of something she wants, warm food, lots of gifts and lastly her father and mother. Unfortunately the story does not end on a happy note.
