(Now Friday!) Weekly Article 6/21
Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! We will be moving our weekly articles to Friday going forward! Today we will be talking about office setups in the United States vs. Japan!
Americans value their privacy and do not like others watching them working. Unlike Japanese offices, which feature workers sitting side-by-side on long, open, tables in the middle of the room, American offices are the opposite. American offices often feature "cubicles," which are walls about 160-180 cm tall that give each employee some privacy to work in. These walls are arranged into rows, which many people jokingly call a "cube farm," because the cubicles are placed in straight rows like how crops are planted at a farm.
Furthermore, fully private offices are highly valued. These private offices are always along the walls of the office building. These "window offices" are prized for their privacy and natural light from windows, and reserved for managers and promoted workers. The "corner office" is the most desired of these private offices, reserved only for the highest-ranking staff. Because buildings have few corners, there are only a few "corner offices" in a building. Furthermore, being in a corner means there are two walls with windows, and two walls inside the building, giving the most natural light and privacy.
What do you think? Would you like to work in a "cube farm" or private office instead of a Japanese open office?

Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! Today we will be talking about public transportation in the United States!
Due to the size of the United States, along with a culture focusing on cars, America has a lack of public transportation compared to many other developed countries. Among 14 Western countries, the United States ranks last in average public transport trips per person. Outside of major city centers, public transportation is sparse, with the only option being buses. These buses do not have very punctual timing, and are often late. Furthermore, these buses have few stops along their routes, and may have very long distances between each stop.
Subways and public trains only appear within big cities. However, these systems are very unclean and poorly maintained compared to many other public trains across the world. The New York Subway is a special exception, being the largest heavy railway system in the world by number of stations. Despite the United States being one of the first countries to develop high speed rail, this form of transporation is very uncommon and only links a handful of cities across the country.
