Harvest Moon 🌾🌕👨🌾
Hello Amity students and family! ◝(ᵔᵕᵔ)◜
This week`s bulletin board post is about the Harvest Moon! This is related to the Autumn Equinox that we learned about in last week`s post. The full Moon that occurs nearest to the Autumn Equinox is called the Harvest Moon.
The name for the Harvest Moon came from farmers! The word `harvest` refers to the act of gathering crops. Around the Autumn Equinox, the full Moon rises around sunset for several nights in a row. This provided farmers with extra light to finish their harvests before the incoming colder weather of October set in.
The Japanese tradition of observing the Harvest Moon is called Tsukimi! Tsukimi is thought to have originated with Japanese aristocrats during the Heian period. They were influenced by the Mid-Autumn Festival from China. At these Tsukimi parties, they would read poetry under the full moon. Some modern Tsukimi traditions include displaying decorations made from Japanese pampas grass (susuki) and eating rice dumplings called Tsukimi dango.
Lots of fast food restaurants such as McDonalds or KFC have special Tsukimi menu items in honor of this cultural event. These menu items will typically have an egg in them to represent the moon.

Hello Mito Amity students and family! (∩˃o˂∩)♡
The 2024 Northern Hemisphere Autumn Equinox is coming up this Sunday, September 22nd! The autumn equinox is an astronomical event that marks the start of autumn (or “fall”). In the Southern Hemisphere, it occurs in March. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox occurs in September – this includes us here in Japan!
During an equinox, the Sun crosses the “celestial equator”. This is an imaginary extension of the Earth’s equator line into space. The autumn equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line, going from north to south. For us living on Earth, this means that the season of fall has begun!
After this equinox, days will become shorter than nights. This is due to the Sun rising later in the morning and setting earlier at night. The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length.
Happy beginnings to the start of this year`s fall season! I hope everyone enjoyed learning about the Autumn Equinox! We look forward to seeing you in your next Amity lesson.
