Vocabulary Spotlight; "so-so".
Hello Everyone,
Today I'd like to talk about a controversial word; "so-so".
I hear a lot of students using this word, but to be honest I think choosing other words can make you sound much more natural than using so-so.
Example 1.
How are you? - I'm so-so.
Here we want to say and word that expresses we are not good but not bad. A more natural response could be
- I'm okay.
- I'm fine.
- Not bad.
- I'm alright.
In this example, "I'm so-so" is technically an acceptable answer, but can sound a little unnatural.
Example 2.
How was your trip? It was so-so good.
Here we want to use a word to make "good" sound smaller. A more natural response could be;
- It was pretty good.
- It was reasonably good.
- It was fairly good.
It's important to note that using so-so ahead of an adjective i.e so-so good, so-so bad, so-so exciting is incorrect english. Be careful not to make this mistake.
Hello Everyone,

Let us know if you try it!
Hello Everyone.
I heard that many of our students will have sports day this month. I hope you're all excited.
What is Japanese sports day like?
In British elementary school we competed as part of four teams during sports day. We had many fun events such as the relay race, egg-and-spoon race, three-legged race and the wheelbarrow race.
Do you also have these same events?
My favorite event to join was the wheelbarrow race. For that event, one students should crawl using their hands, while the other student holds there feet. It was fun to try this event alongside my bestfriend in elementary school.
Let's all enjoy our sports days!
Drill Book Fair, FAQs - Frequently asked questions.
Good Afternoon,
With the drill book fair happening now, I'd like to answer some frequently asked questions.
Q: Why do we need many books?
A: We hope that these books will take one year to finish. Generally speaking, students should aim to finish one drill book every 1-2 months.
P2 Students should aim to finish
2-4 books in a year.
P3 Students should aim to finish
5-8 books in a year.
P4 and P5 Students should aim to finish
8-10 books in a year.
Q: We already have a workbook, why do we need more drill books?
A: While the lesson workbook is important for memorizing lesson content, these other books are designed for building the basic writing and reading skills required for mastering english. Since we are a conversation school, we focus primarily on speaking and listening skills in class. Therefore, it is important to do more drill books at home for a
well balanced english education.
If students are struggling to complete their lesson workbook, it is important that they work hard on drill books in order to improve their basic english skills. After doing so we hope they will then be able to easily complete the lesson workbook too!
Q: What are the differences between the books?
A: To answer plainly,
- The Grade drill book series is designed to help improve students writing and grammar
- The PHONICS book series is for aiding with reading and pronunciation.
- We usually recommend students to be completing a mixture of grade drill book and phonics book sets
- SEESAW, DASH and NEXT books are directly related to the lesson content. They are to help students memorize and master the regular lesson content.
- We also have additional books for extra reading, listening, EIKEN JR and test question comprehension practice.
Q: When can we recieve the books?
A: The books usually take 2-3 weeks from ordering to be delivered to our school. We hope you can order them soon so we can start working on them quickly.
Q: How long should we be spending on drill books?
A: Including the lesson workbook, students ought to be spending about
1 hour a week completing english drillbooks.
