This week is the last lesson of the text book. Lesson 4 is usally a good chance to put everything we've learned from the unit together into a language pattern. The students usually know enough vocabulary words and are able to use their own words to speak their opinion using the language patterns. This is a good chance to use multiple language patterns to have a simple back and forth conversation. Most students are not used to speaking their opinions but with practice and more confidence they can do it.

Learning grammar in a new language can be very difficult. Especially going from English to Japanese or from Japanese to English, because the grammar is so very different. What I found helpful for me learning Japanese, which will help you learn English, is reading the same book in both English and Japanese. This way I can study how the grammar differs in English to Japanese and how the positioning of the words change. This is also helpful if you get stuck reading the English book, as you will be able to find your place in the Japanese version and understand what you are missing. If you are able to, find a book in both Japanese and English and read them together!
In our CH lesson the students are learning a new way to express the time. Instead of saying it is 5:15 or 5:45, we are learning to say, "It's a quarter after five" or "It's a quarter to six." This is not easy to understand at first, but after understanding the meaning of quarter (1/4 or on a clock 15 minutes) the students can begin to put it together. "Quarter after" is usually underatood first. "Quarter to" takes a little more time to intuit. After understanding the meaning, it takes a lot of drilling to understand it. This week was the students' first time so after a few weeks of pratice they should be able to understand it completely.

When I was taught to read as native English speakers in America I was discouraged from looking up new words in the dictionary, we are told to use the context around the word to understand the meaning. This is not a very effective way to learn, especially in a foreign language. It is important that you look up all the words you don't know and try to understand the new word both by itself and in context. When I read in Japanese (and when you read in English) I always have a dictionary handy. Even when I read in English I have my dictionary ready to look up new words. Over the next week try to challenge yourself to read something a little harder than you are used to, and make sure that you bring your trusty dictionary along for the ride!
Elementary Course Contents
This week elementary school students are learning past tense and future tense. It is difficult to remember how to conjugate the verbs but they are learning. It is easy to do it in the workbook but it is much harder to remember while speaking. The students practice a lot in class and by the end of each lesson they can say the language pattern. Practice, practice, practice.
