Remembering Historical Figures
Did you know that February was Black History Month in America?
For one month, we honor the successes and struggles of African Americans throughout American history. During this month we often spend time studying the historical figures who have paved the way for a more equal and just America. Some important people to know are:
Sojourner Truth- 1797-1883
A former slave, Sojourner was an American Activist who fought for African-American Civil Rights, Women's Rights, and alcohol temperence. She was originally born into slavery in New York but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in Michigan.
Martin Luther King Jr.- 1929-1968
A Christian minister, MLK was an American Activist and Civil Rights Leader during the time of Jim Crow in America. Jim Crow Laws forced African Americans from living an equal life as White Americans, this time was known as Segregation in America.
Barack Obama- 1961- present
A former politician, Obama was the first African American President of the United States. He served for 8 years and advocated for policies such as equality, diversity, and national defence.
