Thanksgiving in the U.S. 🦅🍂
Hello Mito Amity students and family! (ノ= ⩊ = )ノ
Welcome to the start of November! While Halloween dominates the month of October, do you what holiday dominates in this autumn month? Thanksgiving! There are many versions Thanksgiving all around the world, but today we will be talking about Thanksgiving in the United States of America.
Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. is always on the fourth Thursday of every November – this means American Thanksgiving will be on November 28 this year! This holiday first began as a remembrance to a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists of Plymouth and the native Wampanoag people. Due to the violent history regarding the colonization of America`s Indigenous communities, this story is slowly being let go off as the sole originator of Thanksgiving. In its place, the focus of the holiday is on giving thanks for everything you have been grateful for in the past year. It is a time for family members to gather with one another to eat, catch up, play games, and simply spend some good old quality time together.
Some traditional American Thanksgiving foods include turkey, bread stuffing, yams, cornbread, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Every Thanksgiving dinner table looks different and will depend on the family`s preferences! For example, many ethnic families will have both American food and their own culture`s food on their Thanksgiving table. There might be enchiladas and bread stuffing, adobo and yams, or kimchi and turkey! Pretty cool, right?
Next week, we will talk about a Thanksgiving holiday from another country. Can you guess where next? Let us know in your next Amity lesson!
Sincerely,
