Let’s learn about Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo is a yearly celebration that is held on May 5th. The name, Cinco de Mayo literally translates to the fifth of May. It’s a day to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. The holiday is popular in the United States because it recognizes Mexican culture and heritage and it is celebrated by many Mexican American people. For this holiday, there are parades, parties, mariachi music, folk dancing, traditional foods such as tacos, festivals and more. Restaurants and shops also offer food and drink deals for this celebration as well.

Let’s Celebrate Mother’s Day
In South Africa, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May; this is year it will be on May 12th. The most commonly used flowers on Mother’s Day is the traditional carnation. In South Africa, Mother's Day is not only to thank mothers, but also grandmothers and other mother figures in their lives.
The Xhosa phrase is 'Usuku lokubhiyozela omama' (meaning “happy mother’s day”). Mother's Day is a day where all the generations of a family celebrate together all the wonderful things that their mothers do for them.
South African gives gifts such as cards, flowers, chocolates. Many also choose to spoil their mothers with a special breakfast (like breakfast in bed!). Others special outings to the movies, picnics or restaurants with their mothers, grandmothers or other special women figures in their lives.

May is APIDA Heritage Month
It’s the last day of April, which means we are starting a new month tomorrow. Did you know that May is APIDA Heritage Month? APIDA stands for Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American. APIDA Heritage Month is a nationally recognized month in America since the year 1990 by the United States government. This designated month celebrates Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American identities, experiences, narratives and stories. It also celebrates the accomplishments, achievements, contributions, culture, tradition and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout time in the United States and the world.
In America, it is celebrated by acknowledging and recognizing people in the APIDA community. Some things people do to bring more awareness and appreciation towards the APIDA community is by going to local events held by the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, going to museums to see Asian art and supporting causes of APIDA members. It is an important month to celebrate in America because it educates people on other’s unique and diverse culture, history and contributions to American history. Not only does it help people understand their own culture and identities but it also helps people understand and recognize the cultures of others.
