Last week I talked about how maple syrup is made. This time I'll tell you about a not so well known traditional Canadian snack made using maple syrup. When I ask Japanese people what they think of when they think about Canadian food, a lot of them talk about maple leaf cookies. While those ARE delicious, they aren't actually a big part of Canadian culture. There is a snack called "tire d'érable" which children in Quebec have been eating since a long time ago. To make this snack, you must boil maple tree sap even hotter than you would to make it into regular maple syrup. Once it's hot enough, pour it over some snow with popsicle sticks or anything else you'd like underneath. The maple sap will quickly cool on the snow and become maple taffy. Now you can pick it up on your stick and enjoy it fresh! If you eat it quickly it will be soft and delicious. When making this snack, just be careful to use clean snow and definitely don't eat the yellow snow!

Where maple syrup comes from
It is well known even in Japan that maple syrup is a traditional Canadian treat. But do Japanese people know where maple syrup comes from? It comes from the sap of maple trees. Workers place a tap directly into the trunk of a maple tree and place a large bucket underneath. The sap from the tree slowly fills the bucket until there's enough to bring it for refining. The buckets full of sap are taken to what's called a "sugarhouse" where it is boiled and finally becomes the maple syrup we enjoy. Maple syrup is super sweet and full of sugar, so even though it's natural don't think that you can eat as much as you want.
