Have you ever been hiking?

Fall is a great season to do outdoor activites. The weather is fine, not too hot and not too cold.

My elementary school students have been learning about outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and rapelling.
My students are really adventurous. Many students have been hiking and camping. Some students have been rock climbing and mountain biking. A few students have even been canoeing.

It was great to hear them speak happily about the outdoor adventures they had with their families.

What kind of outdoor activities do you like to do in fall?

What's the matter?

Recently my kindergarten students have been talking about injuries.
They are so caring!

They have been asking "what's the matter?"

And responding with: "my hands hurt!" or "my head hurts!"

Talking About Homes

Last week my high school students were talking about the kind of homes they want to live in. One of my students said that they want to live in a suburban home, the other wanted to live in a high rise apartment. Neither of them wanted to live in a spooky mansion, even if it was really big! I asked "why not?" and they both said that they were afraid of ghosts.

Would you live in a spooky mansion?

Homographs

Homographs are words that look the same, but are pronounced differently.

In a lesson with a high school student, she was reading aloud in English and Japanese. I noticed that she pronounced 来 differently each time she read it.

1. られますか
2. その後でてください
3. 両親がるんです

There are words like this in English as well. Here are some examples:

read
1. the present tense verb has a long e sound (reed)
2. the past tense verb has a short e sound (red)

minute
1. 60 seconds = 1 minute (min-it)
2. a very small thing is minute (my-new-t)

Can you think of any other homographs?

Clear instructions

During one of my lessons with a junior high school student, we tried an activity which tested our abilty to give and follow instructions. Our goal was to build a spaceship using Lego. However, only one person could see the diagrams on the instruction sheet. That person was the instructor and the other person was the builder. After a while, the roles changed. First, my student started building the model. She followed my instructions easily, and made quick progress. When the roles changed, my student gave clear, smooth instructions. She was able to tell me exactly how and where each piece should go. In the end, it took us just over 10 minutes to build a spaceship together! 🚀

I think my student's abilty to give clear instructions might be better than mine! Are you able to give clear instructions?

Autumn🍁🍂 is here!
Spiders🕷️ are near,
But please don't you worry😟❌,
There's nothing to fear!
Spiders🕷️ are nice😊,
Like sugar🍭 and spice,
So please listen👂 closely,
To my words of advice🗣️;
Be kind🤗🥰 to the spiders🕷️ you see in your house🏡,
They eat all the cockroaches, flies, and woodlouse,
If you see👀 a spider🕷️,
Just leave it be🤚❌!
Spiders🕷️ are friends🧑‍🤝‍🧑,
