Earth Day is an event dedicated to environmental protection and takes place on April 22nd annually. It was first proposed in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Fransisco, California, by John McConnell, a peace activist. After large amounts of support by activists and recognition by the United Nations Secretary General, Earth Day was officially begun by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22nd, 1970. Today, Earth Day holds a wide variety of events across the world, with participants in 193 countries. The theme for 2024's Earth Day was "People v.s. Plastics." Next year, in 2025, Earth Day will celebrate its 55th anniversary.
